    Frequently asked questions

    What is ELSS?

An Equity Linked Savings Scheme is an equity mutual fund whose investments qualify for a deduction under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act, up to ₹1.5 lakh a year in total across all 80C investments.

    What is the lock-in period?

Each investment is locked in for 3 years from its date. With a SIP, every instalment has its own 3-year lock-in.

How is tax saved worked out?

Tax saved = the eligible amount (up to ₹1.5 lakh a year) × your tax slab × 1.04 for cess. It applies only if you file under the old tax regime; the new regime does not allow the 80C deduction.

    Are ELSS gains taxed?

Yes. Gains are treated as long-term capital gains on equity. Use our Capital Gains Tax Calculator to estimate the tax.
